Oh, yes, I am provoked by those nifty proverbs. So I obey the injunction of the three-colored one, and add to the scoldy collection. Here goes.
The three levels of presumption
Level III
癩蛤蟆想吃天娥肉: the toad desires to consume swan meat
alt: 馬不知臉長: the horse knows not the length of its face
Desc.: Venial, barely worth mentioning unless one is feeling really bored and gossipy.
Example: A bald and paunchy hag expects to successfully solicit a hot 14-year old aZn boi.
Level II
不知天高地厚: to not know the immensity of heaven and earth (lit., that the sky is high and the earth is thick)
Desc.: Middling, petty-type of presumption.
Example: A plebeian publicly expresses disdain at the thought of reviewing your paper. (Plebeian: non-peer, not a fuck-buddy of the editor, nor an acquaintance of the editor's fuck-buddy. Also not a contributor to relevant journals. Being hired by the Family Planning Unit of a banana government does not make one a Peer.)
Level I
不可一世: to be insufferably arrogant (lit., cannot one generation ^-^)
Desc.: teH Ultimate.
Example: (Just to be clear here, A is the one demonstrating insufferable arrogance.)
A: I have X clean google (scholar) hits to my name so far.
B: How many r u aiming 4?
A: Inf
B: Whazzat?
A: That's 8 rotated 90 degree clockwise.
一廂情願 means one-sided wish. It is more general, and therefore, more useful than 自作多情, which can only be applied in cases of unrequited lusts.
早知今日何必當初: Depending on the situation, one of these two injunctions:
----- one should always have the presence of mind to give out false name and/or addresses; or
----- one should always have the presence of mind to get the other party's (real) name and/or addresses.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes, this is superfluous but I must unload on you the reason why all the proverbs presented here run along the same theme. These scoldy, esteem-killing gems are what a good parent foists upon a horribly precocious offpsring. They function like those nifty youkai earring limiters thingie, you know? Put the twat in her place and all.Who does she think she is! A dragon is only an overgrown worm, after all.
